The Victorian era was the reign of Queen Victoria, from 20 June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901, the later half of the era overlaps with the first part of the Belle Époque era of continental Europe. The era was one of rapid development and change, far swifter than in previous centuries and where England changed from a rural, agricultural country to an urban, industrialised one.
