During the Victoria era, there was a huge craze for Japanese items, known as Japonisme, sparked by Japan's re-opening in the 1850s, which flooded Europe with exotic goods like lacquerware, porcelain, and ukiyo-e prints and which influenced companies like to Thomas Webb to produce products that emulated carved ivory.
