Victorian silver gilt mounted combined posy holder (also known as a nosegay or tussie-mussie), vinaigrette and scent bottle engraved with an ouroboro, the symbol for the cycle of life. The cut glass scent bottle with push-button sprung hinged lid. The whole hinging at the centre and revealing a further compartment and a hidden hinged vinaigrette engraved with geometric patterns. Attached chain and finger ring. Diamond registration mark 1 August 1868 - siver hallmark London 1869, makers mark HWD for Henry William Dee.

In the Victorian era the tussie mussie paid an important part in floriography by allowing the bearer of the small bouquet to communicate feelings too taboo for words. For example the number and even bud-stage of roses would send a message - a single red rose said  "I love you," and two roses together symbolising a future engagement.
